The San Francisco Mint opened in 1854 in response to the California Gold Rush. Before then, gold had to be sent across the country to Philadelphia or to private minters, often leading to losses or lower payouts. With the new Western mint, gold could be processed and coined locally. One of the earliest coins struck there was the $20 Liberty Double Eagle, which supported the rapidly growing economy in the West. Right now, you can purchase 1891-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins online at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The obverse of the 1891-S Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagle shows Lady Liberty facing left. This design, created by James B. Longacre, features her wearing a coronet inscribed with “Liberty.” Surrounding her are 13 stars, representing the original colonies.
On the reverse of the 1891-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle, you’ll find the Great Seal of the United States. Also designed by Longacre, the image displays an eagle with a shield on its chest, arrows in one talon, and an olive branch in the other. Type III versions include the motto “In God We Trust” (added in 1866) and a revised TWENTY DOLLARS denomination (updated in 1877).
San Francisco’s Double Eagles played a major role in large financial transactions during the West’s rapid expansion. Their high face value made them ideal for banking and business deals. The number of coins struck often reflected the region’s economic highs and lows during this era.
These 1891-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles are Extremely Fine, meaning they show light wear with much of the detail still visible and some original mint luster possibly remaining. Each coin is shipped in a plastic flip. On the Sheldon Scale, XF coins typically rate between 40 and 45.
