The 1875-S Liberty Double Eagle is a well-known release from the San Francisco Mint during the 1870s. With a total mintage of around 1.23 million coins, this issue saw wider production than many others during the decade. Its availability reflects the steady output of gold being refined at the time, largely sourced from Nevada’s Comstock Lode. Right now, 1875-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available to order from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1875-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle available here is in Extremely Fine condition and ships in a secure plastic flip. Coins graded at this level usually fall between 40 and 45 on the Sheldon Scale, with light wear on raised surfaces and possible hints of original mint luster.
Many of the 1875-S Double Eagles in the market show minor marks from circulation, especially due to their use in global trade rather than within the United States. These coins carry the Type II reverse design (used from 1866 to 1876), which includes the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and spells out the denomination as “TWENTY D.”
The obverse of the 1875-S Liberty Double Eagle presents a portrait of Lady Liberty. Designed by James B. Longacre, who served as the U.S. Mint’s 4th Chief Engraver, this image closely follows earlier Liberty designs. Liberty is shown in profile facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed with the word “LIBERTY.”
The reverse of the coin showcases the Great Seal of the United States. The bald eagle is shown with wings outstretched and a shield on its chest. It holds arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, symbolizing both readiness for war and a desire for peace.
