The $20 Double Eagle is one of the most coveted coins from American history. The largest coin denomination ever issued by the US Mint for circulation use, the Double Eagle was produced from 1850 to 1933. The original design was known as the Liberty Double Eagle and graced the coins for 58 years. Now, 1873 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins with an Open 3 are available for purchase from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The US Eagle denomination was one of the first coin programs offered by the United States Mint following its founding in 1792. The series consisted of a $10 Eagle, $5 Half Eagle, and $2.50 Quarter Eagle. It wasn’t until the California Gold Rush produced an influx of gold for the Treasury that the US Mint introduced the $20 Double Eagle.
From its introduction in 1850 until 1907, the $20 Double Eagle featured designs from James B. Longacre, the Chief Engraver of the US Mint at the time the coin was introduced. Only one other design would ever feature in this series, that coming from Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907 and gracing the coins through 1933.
The obverse of these 1873 Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagles includes a bust of Lady Liberty. This effigy was created by Longacre using Christian Gobrecht’s portrait of Liberty as inspiration. Liberty is shown in left-profile relief with a coronet crown on her head.
On the reverse of 1873 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coins, you will find a depiction of the Great Seal of the United States. This image features a front-facing bald eagle supporting the US national shield. The eagle clutches the olive branch of peace and arrows of war in its talons.
These 1873 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available in AU58 condition. Coins with this grade are widely considered as being almost BU in quality. These coins have only trace signs of friction on the highest relief points and near-full mint luster. As an Open 3 coin, these items have greater separation in the tips of the number 3 in the 1873 date mark.
