In 1850, the United States Mint introduced the Gold Double Eagle denomination. This coin was the fourth denomination added to a series that already included Eagle, Half Eagle, and Quarter Eagle denominations. While many denominations shared similar designs in the 19th century, the Double Eagle stood out with its unique features. Today, 1873 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles with an Open 3 are available at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The US Mint started issuing the Eagle, Half Eagle, and Quarter Eagle in 1794 and 1795. These coins were valued at $10, $5, and $2.50, respectively. The Double Eagle, a $20 coin, was added in 1850 and remains the largest denomination ever circulated by the US Mint.
All 1873 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles available here are in AU50 condition. Coins with this grade show only minimal signs of wear on the highest points of the design. Many of these coins still have a medium to full original mint luster. The Open 3 designation refers to the slightly larger opening in the numeral 3 in the 1873 date.
The obverse of the 1873 $20 Liberty Double Eagle features a portrait of Lady Liberty designed by James B. Longacre. Inspired by Christian Gobrecht’s earlier designs, this left-profile bust shows Liberty with a coronet crown and is surrounded by 13 stars.
The reverse side of the 1873 Pre-33 Gold Double Eagle Coin displays an ornate version of the Great Seal of the United States. This includes a bald eagle with the US national shield, holding arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. Above the eagle’s head is the national motto within a ring of 13 stars.
