The Liberty Gold Double Eagle was the first design in the $20 gold coin series in the United States. Introduced in 1850, it remained in production until 1907, outlasting its successor, the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. The $20 Liberty Double Eagles available here were first minted in 1861, just before the start of the US Civil War. Today, certified 1861-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The 1861 release of $20 Liberty Double Eagles was significant in the series’ history. It marked a shift in production focus due to the outbreak of the US Civil War in 1861, which altered the dynamics of gold coin production. In 1861, the Philadelphia Mint issued nearly four times as many $20 Double Eagles as San Francisco, but in each of the next four years, San Francisco would strike anywhere between three and eights times the volume of Double Eagles than Philadelphia.
All 1861-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins in this listing are in AU58 condition. These coins are at the top of the About Uncirculated range and can often be mistaken for BU coins. AU58 coins exhibit only minor friction on the highest points and often retain full mint luster.
On the obverse of the 1861-S Liberty Gold Double Eagle, you’ll find a portrait of Lady Liberty. This left-profile bust is inspired by Greco-Roman designs and depicts Liberty wearing a coronet crown, surrounded by a ring of 13 stars.
The reverse of the 1861-S $20 Gold Double Eagle Coin features the Great Seal of the United States. This detailed design shows a front-facing bald eagle holding the US national shield, with its talons clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
