The 1861 release of $20 Liberty Double Eagles was significant in the series’ history. It marked a shift in production focus due to the outbreak of the US Civil War in 1861, which altered the dynamics of gold coin production. In 1861, the Philadelphia Mint issued nearly four times as many $20 Double Eagles as San Francisco, but in each of the next four years, San Francisco would strike anywhere between three and eights times the volume of Double Eagles than Philadelphia.
