Since 2005, the Royal Canadian Mint has done something rarely seen anywhere in the world. It has periodically issued a rare 99.999% pure, 1-oz. Gold Canadian Maple Leaf coin. This is among the purest of gold coins you can find anywhere.
And because the country only issues these extra-pure coins during certain years, it makes owning them that much rarer. These are packaged on protective assay cards and weigh one troy ounce of pure gold. They bear a face value of either $50 (CAD) or $200 (CAD) depending on the year and are guaranteed and fully backed by the Canadian government.
Like its .9999-purity counterpart, this .99999-fine Maple Leaf depicts Susanna Blunt’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Blunt’s portrait is the fourth generation of the Queen and the first depicting a reigning monarch without a crown since her father, King George VI.
On the reverse (back) side of many of the Gold Canadian Maple Leaf 1-oz .99999-fine coins is the triple sugar maple leaf, designed by Stanley Witten. This is different from the Walter Ott design with a single maple leaf on the .9999 version. Witten’s design shows the three leaves connected on a single stem and was also used on the famed Million-Dollar Maple Leaf coin in 2007.
