Goldbacks are privately issued notes that function as a voluntary form of local currency. Each note is made using a thin layer of 24-karat gold sealed between protective polyester layers, giving the note durability while preserving the gold content inside. Every Goldback features detailed artwork and contains a precise fractional amount of physical gold, making it one of the few modern examples of gold used as spendable currency. First introduced in Utah, the Goldback program has expanded to several other states. The Idaho series continues that growth with designs inspired by the people, history, and landscapes connected to the state. Right now, BullionMax offers the 1/2 Idaho Goldback Gold Note.
Note Highlights:
In Roman tradition, Pietas was regarded as one of the most respected virtues. Represented as a calm and dignified female figure, Pietas symbolized devotion and responsibility to the gods, family, and the broader community. Classical depictions often show her holding a patera, a small ceremonial dish used in offerings, or accompanied by a stork, which represented care for family members. In some artistic portrayals, she may also appear with a swallow or near a small altar. The idea of pietas reflected a strong moral duty to respect sacred relationships, including those between parents and children, citizens and their country, and humanity and the divine.
All 1/2 Idaho Goldback Gold Notes contain 24-karat gold and feature advanced design and security elements. The artwork includes UV enhancements that become visible under ultraviolet light, along with detailed micro-printing and individual serial numbers for authentication. Single notes are placed in protective currency sleeves. When purchased in quantities of 100, the notes are grouped together and secured with a black bundle band. Bundled notes are not individually sleeved.
For the design of the 1/2 Idaho Goldback Gold Note, the virtue of Pietas is represented through imagery honoring Sacagawea. Sacagawea, a Lemhi Shoshone woman who helped guide and interpret for the Lewis and Clark Expedition, has strong historical ties to the region now known as Idaho. She was born around 1788 near present-day Salmon, Idaho, in the Lemhi Valley. As a child, she was taken by Hidatsa raiders and later lived among the Mandan people in what is now North Dakota. When the Lewis and Clark Expedition traveled through Idaho in 1805, Sacagawea’s understanding of the landscape, her communication with the Shoshone, and her steady presence were important factors in helping the expedition continue westward.
