The Draped Bust design is one of the earliest coin styles from the young United States Mint. Used across several denominations from 1795 to 1807, it follows the neoclassical look that was common at the time. The obverse shows Liberty with flowing hair and a draped cloth over her shoulder, a calm symbol of the nation’s values. Now, 1801 Draped Bust Large Cent Coins are available online in certified condition from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
In the obverse design of the 1801 Draped Bust Large Cent, you’ll see a right-facing portrait of Liberty. Her hair flows down the back of her neck, and a light drapery rests at the neckline. Many historians note that artist Gilbert Stuart’s idea may have been inspired by Ann Willing Bingham of Philadelphia, whose look matched the refined style favored in early American art.
For the reverse of 1801 Draped Bust Large Cent Coins, the mint kept things straightforward. The words ONE CENT appear at the center, surrounded by a wreath. Around the rim, you’ll find the country of issue and a fractional value of 1/100.
The Large Cent was the first copper penny made by the United States Mint. The series began in 1793 and continued each year except 1815. That gap is linked to the War of 1812, when the United States often relied on copper planchets from Great Britain. Large Cents were produced with pure copper without adding other metals on purpose.
These 1801 Draped Bust Large Cent Coins come sealed in plastic slabs and carry a Good 4 grade from the Professional Coin Grading Service. At this level, the major design elements are visible in outline, though finer details may be faint or missing. The rim is typically complete, but light wear—especially near the tops of letters—can be present.
