One of the most collected formats from the United States Mint is the silver dollar. While silver dollars were once struck for circulation, the 1930s marked the final era when these coins were widely released for everyday use. In modern times, the silver dollar has instead become a familiar format for US Mint commemorative programs. Today, $1 US Mint Commemorative Silver Coins are available online from BullionMax in a range of conditions.
Coin Highlights:
From the 1840s through 1956, the United States Mint regularly issued commemorative coins to mark important people, places, and events in American history. However, interest in these releases declined over time, and concerns about design quality led the Eisenhower Administration to suspend all future commemorative coin programs.
Modern commemorative coinage returned in 1982 with the release of a half dollar honoring the 250th anniversary of George Washington’s birth. Beginning in 1983, the US Mint introduced what would become the most common commemorative format: the silver dollar. Since that time, most years have seen the release of at least one $1 US Mint Commemorative Silver Coin.
The obverse designs on these commemorative silver dollars vary depending on the theme of the program. Each obverse typically features a detailed portrait or symbolic image tied to the individual, event, or milestone being honored in that year’s release.
Reverse designs also change from issue to issue and are created to complement the obverse theme. These designs often include meaningful locations, symbols, or inscriptions connected to the subject of the commemorative program.
One well-known example you may receive is the 1990 Eisenhower Centennial Dollar. This coin was issued to mark 100 years since Dwight D. Eisenhower’s birth in 1890. The obverse features two portraits of Eisenhower, one depicting him as Supreme Allied Commander during World War II and the other showing him later in life as President of the United States. The reverse design displays his home near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
These $1 US Mint Commemorative Silver Coins are offered in varied conditions and ship individually housed in plastic flips. Many earlier issues are struck in 90% silver with 10% copper, while later releases often contain .999 pure silver. Specific designs and conditions cannot be selected. When ordering multiple coins, duplicates in design and condition are possible.
