The Santa Maria served as Christopher Columbus’s flagship during his famous 1492 voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, even though she was the largest and slowest ship in his three-vessel fleet. The Santa Maria is the first ship featured in a new series called Legends of the Seas. As the name suggests, this collection focuses on well-known ships from maritime history. Right now, 2026 1 oz Proof Colorized Cook Islands Silver Legends of the Seas Santa Maria Coins are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The ship was originally named La Gallega, a nod to her Galician roots, and she was built in the carrack style. She measured roughly 62 feet long and displaced about 100 tons. Columbus reportedly didn’t consider her his favorite, often preferring the smaller and more agile Niña, but he used the Santa Maria because her owner, Juan de la Cosa, was on board and served as master. Around 40 crewmen sailed on the journey that would go on to change history.
Each 2026 1 oz Proof Colorized Cook Islands Silver Legends of the Seas Santa Maria Coin is housed in a presentation window box. The coin features proof visuals with frosted design elements and reflective, mirrored fields. On the reverse, the crosses on the ship’s sails have selective red colorization, adding an extra point of contrast to the scene.
On the obverse of 2026 Proof Colorized Cook Islands Silver Legends of the Seas Santa Maria Coins, you’ll find King Charles III. The portrait shows His Majesty in left-profile relief without a crown. This is one of the first-generation effigies of Charles III, created by Dan Thorne.
The reverse of 2026 1 oz Proof Colorized Silver Legends of the Seas Santa Maria Coins depicts Christopher Columbus alongside the Santa Maria sailing on open waters. The ship’s story ended on Christmas Eve 1492 when she ran aground on a coral reef near the coast of present-day Haiti. When the vessel could not be recovered, Columbus ordered her timbers taken and used to build La Navidad, known as the first Spanish settlement in the New World.
