The Perth Mint launched the Australian Nugget series in 1986 as the nation’s official gold bullion coin program, helping strengthen Australia’s role in the global precious metals market. The original reverse designs highlighted some of the most famous gold nuggets ever found in Australia. In 1989, the series transitioned to the Australian Kangaroo name when the reverse began featuring the country’s well-known native animal. In 2026, The Perth Mint marks 40 years of the program by revisiting its original nugget theme. Right now, 2026 1 oz Australian Silver 40th Anniversary of the Australian Nugget Coins are available online from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The obverse of the 2026 1 oz Silver 40th Anniversary of the Australian Nugget Coin features King Charles III. His left-profile effigy was designed by Dan Thorne and presents the monarch without a crown. This portrait style follows current Australian coin traditions that show the reigning sovereign in a natural, uncrowned depiction.
The reverse of the 2026 Australian Silver 40th Anniversary of the Australian Nugget Coin showcases Stuart Devlin’s original design concept for the series. At the center is the Welcome Stranger nugget, recognized as the largest gold nugget ever discovered. It was found in Victoria in February 1869 by prospectors John Deason and Richard Oates. The design carefully captures the nugget’s shape, with radiating lines in the background and a subtle outline of the Australian continent behind the main image.
Gold discoveries began across Australia in the 1850s, but Western Australia’s most significant gold rush developed later. Major finds at Coolgardie in 1892 and Kalgoorlie in 1893, including the famous Golden Mile, brought waves of prospectors to the region. Despite the harsh and remote conditions, the richness of the deposits made Western Australia one of the most productive goldfields in history.
These 2026 1 oz Australian Silver 40th Anniversary of the Australian Nugget Coins are packaged in acrylic capsules and include a Perth Mint presentation box, a themed outer shipper, and a Certificate of Authenticity. Each coin features 24-karat gold enhancements, with a thin layer of gold applied to the rim and to the image of the Welcome Stranger nugget on the reverse.
