First issued in 1878, the Morgan Silver Dollar was created by George T. Morgan after Congress passed the Bland–Allison Act, which directed the Treasury to purchase large amounts of silver for dollar coins. The original run lasted until 1921. Morgan Silver Dollars quickly became a familiar sight across the growing American West. They were produced at five mints—Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, Carson City, and Denver. Strikes ended in 1904 when federal silver supplies ran low, returned briefly in 1921 to respond to post–World War I needs, and then transitioned to the Peace Dollar later that same year.
