The original Peace Dollar design was the result of a 1921 competition held by the Commission of Fine Arts. It aimed to celebrate the end of World War I with a silver dollar that symbolized peace. Sculptor Anthony de Francisci’s submission, featuring Liberty and a resting eagle, was chosen and remains a classic design today.
