Koalas are native to eucalyptus forests and woodlands, relying almost entirely on eucalyptus leaves as their main food source. Their range stretches from Queensland through New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. Today, their habitats are increasingly limited due to urban development, land use changes, and climate pressures. This has led to scattered populations and reduced natural range.

Each 2025 5 oz Proof Australian Silver Koala Coin comes in a Perth Mint presentation case with a black base and clear acrylic lid. The coin is packaged in a themed Koala shipper and includes a Certificate of Authenticity. With its high-relief design, the coin’s details are brought out against a deeper field. Select areas of the coin, including the rim and the koala on the reverse, are highlighted with 24-karat gold.

The obverse of the 2025 Proof Koala Coin features the first official portrait of King Charles III used on Perth Mint coinage. This design, created by Dan Thorne, shows the King in left-profile relief without a crown.

On the reverse, the design by Aleysha Howarth shows a koala clinging to a eucalyptus branch. Across Australia, three recognized subspecies of koalas can be found. Northern Queensland koalas are generally smaller and lighter in color, Victorian koalas are larger with darker fur, and populations in New South Wales show traits that fall in between.
