The idea of Santa’s workshop at the North Pole grew in the 19th and early 20th centuries as holiday stories evolved. Earlier European tales spoke of different gift givers, but the picture of Santa making toys in a magical Arctic shop took shape alongside the Industrial Revolution. It blended old folklore about elves and skilled makers with a Victorian interest in factories and the growing commercial side of Christmas.
