Although most collectors associate the Morgan Dollar with the late 19th century, the coin saw an unexpected return in 1921. That year, production resumed under the Pittman Act, which called for millions of silver dollars to be struck to replace coins that had been melted and sold overseas during World War I. Over 86 million Morgan Dollars were minted in 1921 across three facilities. This marked the final year of the original design, which was later replaced by the Peace Dollar before the series was retired again.
