The Peace Silver Dollar was first released in December 1921 as a symbol of the peace achieved after World War I. The design was created by Italian-American sculptor Anthony de Francisci and featured a fresh interpretation of Liberty inspired by his wife, Teresa. Her portrait showed Liberty with natural, flowing hair and a radiant crown, offering a more modern look than earlier silver dollar designs. In 2021, the US Mint brought the Peace Dollar back as a special silver bullion issue struck in .999 fine silver to mark the 100th anniversary of its debut. Right now, 2021 Peace Silver Dollar Coins are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 2021 Peace Silver Dollar Coin offered here is housed in an individual protective plastic capsule. Historically, the Peace Dollar was the last silver dollar struck with 90% silver for everyday circulation in the United States. Original production ran from 1921 through 1928, with a brief return in 1934 and 1935. The 2021 release represents a shift from circulation coinage to a bullion-focused format designed for modern collectors and silver buyers.
The original Peace Silver Dollars were produced during two different periods that reflected changes in the US economy. From 1921 to 1928, coins were minted at facilities in Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco, with mintages that varied widely by year. Some of these earlier issues have since become key dates for collectors. After production stopped, the series was revived briefly in the mid-1930s due to new silver purchase laws, bringing an end to regular silver dollar production for many years.
The obverse of the 2021 Peace Dollar Coin features a left-facing image of Lady Liberty. This design was a clear break from the Morgan Dollar that came before it, showing Liberty with a sharp, spiked crown meant to resemble rays of sunlight. The facial features are based on Teresa de Francisci, maintaining a direct link to the original artist’s vision from 1921.
On the reverse of the 2021 Peace Silver Dollar is a calm image of a bald eagle. The eagle rests on a rock inscribed with the word “PEACE” and holds an olive branch, symbolizing harmony and resolution. Sun rays rising from the bottom of the design further highlight the theme of peace following a time of global conflict.
