Product Details

The 2021 issuance of the 2 oz florin is a new coin struck by Australia's renowned Perth Mint. The florin is an ancient coin, first issued in 1344 by England's King Edward III. For over 600 years, a florin was worth two shillings in England's old monetary system (240 pennies per pound sterling). As a Commonwealth nation, Australia started minting its own florins in 1910 and stopped in 1963 when the English currency system was simplified (or "decimalized" to today's 100 pennies per pound sterling denominations).

After updating this time-honored coin to the 20th Century, Perth Mint has released this 2 oz silver florin but they're not easy to find. For that reason alone, we're proud to show this coin off to you!

A closer look at the Australian 2 oz silver florin

On the reverse side, we see an emu and a kangaroo standing on either side of a shield bearing the Australian national coat of arms, with the star of the Australian Federation shown overhead. The shield includes the Cross of St. George and a representation of the Southern Cross, the constellation once used by settlers navigating the ocean towards Australia. The date 1910 appears on the reverse as well, referring to the year Australia minted its first florin.

Jody Clark’s fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II adorns the obverse. A small portrait of King Edward VIII is inset above Her Majesty’s.

Each coin is valid legal tender in Australia (AU$2) and struck with 0.9999 fine silver. The unlimited mintage guarantees high liquidity, and each coin is sealed in a protective acrylic capsule to protect the metal within. While the 2021 2 oz florin is a new offering, florins were actually first minted over 100 years ago in Australia as circulated currency, starting in 1910. The coins were then worth 24 pence each, before the government scrapped them in 1966 when it moved to the decimal system and replaced pounds with dollars.

Two troy ounces of 99.99% (0.9999 fine) silver make for a sizable, substantial coin with a diameter of 1.61 inches (40.9 millimeters).The silver florin gives you a really solid feeling in-hand. Typically, larger coins like this one offer a lower premium over the spot price of silver than smaller coins. (Consider that two one-ounce coins, for example, would have approximately double the manufacturing cost.)

Two ounce coins like this one are relatively unusual and offer opportunities to diversify your collection. Tired of 1 oz silver coins? We've got you covered!
