To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the American Silver Eagle series, the United States Mint introduced two different versions of the coin in 2021. The Type 1 coins featured the original reverse created by John Mercanti, while the Type 2 coins debuted a new reverse design from Emily Damstra. Along with this change, the Mint also updated security features across both the American Silver Eagle and American Gold Eagle programs. Right now, certified 2021 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coins are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 2021 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coin offered here has been certified Mint State 70 by PCGS. A coin with an MS70 grade shows full, original mint luster and no visible imperfections. These coins also feature the PCGS Blue Label, a standard label commonly found with MS70 and MS69 certified examples.
The 2021 release is one of the most notable in the history of the Silver Eagle series. For the first time, two different reverse designs were issued in the same year. Early 2021 coins showcased the long-running reverse design, while the updated bald eagle design entered production later in the year, beginning around July 2021. This makes the Type 2 coins an important part of the series timeline.
The obverse of the 2021 American Silver Eagle Type 2 Coin continues to display Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design. First introduced in 1916 on the half-dollar, the image shows Liberty walking toward the rising sun with the American flag draped over her shoulders. On this updated version, Weinman’s “AW” initials are included in the lower-right area of the design.
On the reverse of the 2021 1 oz Silver Eagle Type 2 Coin is a new image of a bald eagle in flight, created by Emily Damstra. The Mint reviewed more than 30 possible designs before choosing this one. This artwork replaced John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle reverse, which had been used on the Silver Eagle since 1986.
