In 2021, the United States Mint marked the 35th anniversary of the American Silver Eagle with two different releases. Early in the year, the Type 1 Silver Eagle continued with the long-running reverse from John Mercanti. Later, the Mint introduced the Type 2 coin featuring an all-new reverse from Emily Damstra. This update also included refreshed designs within the broader American Eagle program. Today, certified 2021 1 oz American Silver Eagle Type 2 Coins are available online at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The obverse of the 2021 American Silver Eagle Type 2 Coin features Adolph A. Weinman’s well-known Walking Liberty design. Originally used on the 1916 half dollar, this image shows Liberty walking toward the rising sun with the American flag draped over her shoulders. Her figure is shown in left-profile relief, symbolizing hope and forward movement. In 2021, the Mint also restored Weinman’s “AW” initials to the lower-right field of the obverse.
On the reverse of the 2021 1 oz Silver Eagle Type 2 Coin is Emily Damstra’s new bald eagle design. After reviewing more than 30 different concepts, the Mint selected this image of an eagle approaching for landing while carrying an oak branch. This modern depiction replaced the heraldic eagle design by John Mercanti that had appeared on the Silver Eagle since 1986.
As part of the 35th anniversary celebration, the Mint produced both Type 1 and Type 2 Silver Eagles in 2021. Production began with the original design early in the year, followed by a brief pause in June to transition to the new reverse dies. The same process occurred within the American Gold Eagle series.
These 2021 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coins are housed in protective plastic slabs and include a special West Point Core label highlighting the history of the West Point Mint. Coins graded Mint State 70 exhibit full, original mint luster with no visible imperfections. First Day of Issue coins were submitted for grading within 24 hours of their release from the Mint.
