In 2018, the Chinese Mint introduced an eight-coin series that pays tribute to vintage silver dollar designs. The first release in this series is the Kiangnan Dragon Dollar, modeled after the original 1904 Chinese Silver Dragon Dollar from the Kiangnan province. Right now, you can find 2018 1 oz Chinese Silver Kiangnan Dragon Dollar Coins available at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 2018 1 oz Chinese Silver Kiangnan Dragon Dollar Coin ships in a protective plastic capsule. This issue is a modern restrike of the 1904 Kiangnan Silver Dollar, a coin that is especially popular among collectors of Asian coinage. Originally minted during the Qing Dynasty, the historical coin featured a unique dragon design that became iconic in Chinese numismatics.
The Kiangnan Dragon Dollar design saw subtle changes during its original production period from 1897 to 1905. These changes included small differences in the dragon’s appearance, especially in its face and scales, allowing collectors to identify specific year varieties.
The obverse of the 2018 coin replicates the dragon image first used on the 1904 silver dollar. This dragon symbolized the Kiang Nan province and stood out from other regional designs with its fuller form, rounded facial features, and the five claws that signify imperial strength. Its bold eyebrows and winding posture also add to its unique style.
On the reverse side of the 2018 Chinese Silver Kiangnan Dragon Dollar, you’ll find Chinese characters that mirror those on the original 1904 issue. These markings include the name of the emperor at the time and a reference to the coin’s weight.
