The Royal Mint introduced the Silver Britannia Series in 1998, giving collectors a new way to see Britannia on British coinage. Early on, the mint alternated between Philip Nathan’s well-known 1987 portrait and fresh designs in odd-numbered years. That rotating approach ended in 2012, with the series returning to Nathan’s design each year. Today, 2004 1 oz British Silver Britannia Coins are available at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Britannia has appeared on British coinage since Roman times. Over the centuries, she moved from a symbol tied to a distant province to a national figure associated with maritime strength. More recently, her image has taken on a broader meaning as a steady protector, reflecting the UK’s emphasis on civic values and continuity.
All 2004 1 oz British Silver Britannia Coins listed here arrive in protective plastic flips. The 2004 issue recorded a mintage of 57,000 coins, landing near the middle of the range for the series’ early years. Between 2000 and 2010, the series saw its lowest mintage in 2002 at 36,543 pieces and its highest in 2010 at 129,086 pieces, offering helpful context for the 2004 total.
On the obverse of 2004 British Silver Britannias, you’ll find the fourth-generation portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley, this right-facing effigy shows the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara, a familiar element on UK coinage of the era.
The reverse of the 2004 1 oz Silver Britannia Coin features Philip Nathan’s 1987 interpretation of Britannia. She is shown wearing a Corinthian helmet and holding a trident in her right hand. Her left hand carries an olive branch and rests upon a shield bearing the Union Jack, presenting a clear, traditional view of the national figure.
