In 2001, the US Mint issued a special commemorative set of silver dollars featuring the classic designs from the Buffalo Nickel. Originally created by artist James Earle Fraser, these images were used on circulating nickels between 1913 and 1938. The 2001 release brought Fraser’s work to a larger silver dollar format, giving collectors a chance to enjoy these iconic American designs with more detail and shine. Right now, BullionMax has 2001 $1 US Mint Commemorative Silver Buffalo 2-Coin Sets available to purchase.
Coin Set Highlights:
Each 2001 $1 US Mint Commemorative Silver Buffalo 2-Coin Set comes with two coins—one in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and one in Proof. Both are housed in protective capsules and come in an official US Mint display case with a Certificate of Authenticity. The coins are struck in 90% silver with a total silver weight of 1.546 Troy oz between them. The remaining 10% of each coin is copper.
The Buffalo Nickel design was the work of American sculptor James Earle Fraser and debuted in 1913. The coin was officially called the Indian Head Nickel and paid tribute to both the people and wildlife of the American West. Its images made it one of the most recognizable and well-loved US coin designs until it was retired in 1938.
The obverse side of each 2001 Commemorative Silver Buffalo Dollar shows a Native American figure. Fraser combined features from several real individuals—such as Iron Tail, Big Tree, and Two Moons—to create this portrait. The image reflects traditional elements of dress and accessories with realistic detail.
On the reverse, the coin features a powerful bison known as Black Diamond, who once lived at the Central Park Zoo in New York. The image honors the vast herds of bison that once roamed across the Great Plains, serving as a symbol of American wildlife and western history.
