The Mexican Mint introduced the Silver Libertad in 1982, launching a new annual bullion series with the 1 oz coin at its core. Since then, the 1 oz Silver Libertad has been struck each year without interruption. Over time, both the obverse and reverse artwork of the series have evolved, with earlier issues featuring different designs than more recent releases. Right now, you can find 1992 1 oz Mexican Silver Libertad Coins available for purchase at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
During the early years of the Libertad series, the Mexican Mint borrowed its coin imagery from the 1921 Gold Centenario. The obverse design used from 1982 to 1999 features Mexico’s modern coat of arms without additional embellishment. Starting in 2000, the mint added a border with 10 historic versions of the coat of arms to the design of larger silver coins. On the reverse, coins dated from 1982 to 1995 display a straight-on view of Winged Victory, while a side-angled version replaced it starting in 1996.
Each 1992 1 oz Mexican Silver Libertad Coin offered here is housed in a protective plastic flip. This particular issue holds the highest mintage of any Silver Libertad release. With a total of 2,458,000 coins struck, the 1992 edition surpasses the next largest mintage (1985) by over 400,000 and nearly doubles the top mintage total seen in the 21st century (2016).
The obverse of the 1992 Silver Libertad displays Mexico’s national seal. At the center, a golden eagle is shown standing on a cactus while subduing a snake with its beak and talons. This powerful scene is framed by a decorative Aztec-inspired border that completes the design.
On the reverse, the 1992 1 oz Silver Libertad features the front-facing version of Winged Victory. First used on the Centenario gold coin in 1921, the design shows her holding a laurel wreath in one hand and broken chains in the other, symbolizing independence and freedom.
