Issued in 1955 and 1956, the 10 Peso Mexican Silver Coin features a portrait of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Catholic priest who became one of the leading figures in Mexico’s fight for independence. Because of its nearly 1-ounce weight and 90% silver content, the coin became known as the Hidalgo Grande. Today, you can find 1955-1956 10 Peso Mexican Silver Coins in About Uncirculated (AU) or Extremely Fine (XF) condition available at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1955-1956 10 Peso Mexican Silver Coin comes safely packaged in a protective flip. Struck with 90% silver and 10% copper, these coins represent a historic period of Mexican coinage. All coins in this series are offered at random once your payment clears, so we cannot guarantee whether you will receive a coin from 1955 or 1956, nor can we guarantee whether it will be AU or XF condition.
Miguel Hidalgo, born in 1753 in Guanajuato, was a forward-thinking parish priest. He advocated for the rights of indigenous people and mestizos, encouraged education, and pushed for improvements in agriculture and industry. His efforts challenged Spanish colonial rules and helped lay the groundwork for Mexico’s independence movement.
The obverse of each coin showcases the official Mexican coat of arms. This design features a golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus while fighting a serpent. A wreath sits below the eagle, while inscriptions around the design identify the nation of issue and other key markings in Spanish.
On the reverse side, you will find the portrait of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. This left-facing image honors the man remembered as the “Father of Mexican Independence” for his role in inspiring the nation’s fight against Spain.
