Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was a key figure in Mexico’s fight for independence. His image appeared on several Mexican gold and silver coins during the 20th century, including silver pesos from the 1950s. Born in 1753 in Guanajuato, Hidalgo was known for his progressive ideas, questioning colonial rule and standing up for the rights of indigenous peoples and mestizos. Today, BullionMax offers 1951-1954 5 Peso Mexican Silver Coins in About Uncirculated (AU) or Extremely Fine (XF) condition.
Coin Highlights:
On September 16, 1810, Hidalgo delivered the “Grito de Dolores” (Cry of Dolores), a powerful call to arms that launched the Mexican independence movement. He led a large army made up of indigenous peoples, mestizos, and criollos, winning some early victories before suffering defeat at the Battle of Calderón Bridge in January 1811. Captured while trying to escape, Hidalgo was executed on July 30, 1811. His death only fueled the fight for independence, which was eventually achieved in 1821.
Each 1951-1954 5 Peso Mexican Silver Coin available here comes packaged in a plastic flip with the year of issue and condition selected at random. All coins were struck between 1951 and 1954 and will arrive in either About Uncirculated or Extremely Fine condition. These coins feature a metal mix of .720 silver and .28 copper.
The obverse side of the 1951-1954 Mexican Silver Coins displays Mexico’s national coat of arms. This emblem depicts a golden eagle in left-profile, perched on a cactus with a serpent in its beak and talons. A wreath appears below, with inscriptions in Spanish surrounding the design to identify the coin and its issuing nation.
On the reverse, you’ll find a detailed left-profile portrait of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. Remembered as the father of Mexican independence, Hidalgo’s image remains a lasting symbol of courage and resistance.
