Product Details

The Liberty Head Nickel series was struck from 1883 through 1912 and holds an important place in the history of United States coinage. Created by Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber, the design is widely recognized by collectors, particularly because of the famous 1913 Liberty Head Nickel, a coin known today in only five examples. While that rare issue draws much attention, the broader series remains popular for its classic design and relatively manageable set of dates and mint marks. This particular 1906 nickel is a proof example graded PR64 by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). Today, certified 1906 Liberty Head Nickels are available online at BullionMax.

Coin Highlights:

  • Coin arrives in an individual slab!
  • 24th issue of Liberty Head Nickels!
  • Produced by the Philadelphia Mint!
  • Contains 75% copper.
  • Issued a face value of $.05 (USD) by the United States.
  • Bears a grade of PR64 from the PCGS.
  • Lady Liberty is on the obverse.
  • A wreath surrounds the Roman numeral V on the reverse.

These 1906 Liberty Head Nickels are offered in PR64 condition. As proof coins, these specimens display pleasing overall eye appeal along with typical mint luster. Several small contact marks may appear, sometimes grouped together, and one or two moderate marks may also be visible. Minor patches of hairlines could be present, along with light scuffs or other small surface imperfections.

On the obverse of the 1906 Liberty Head Nickel is a left-facing portrait of Liberty created in the neoclassical style preferred by Charles E. Barber. Liberty wears a coronet bearing her name, while her hair is neatly pulled back and styled. The portrait is simple and balanced, reflecting the design approach used for many American coins of the late 19th century.

The reverse of the 1906 Liberty Head Nickel features a bold Roman numeral “V” at the center, indicating the coin’s five-cent denomination. Surrounding the numeral is a decorative wreath composed of cotton, corn, wheat, and tobacco plants. These agricultural elements were chosen to represent important crops of the United States and are tied together at the bottom with a ribbon.

The 1906 Liberty Head Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint and does not feature a mint mark, which was typical for Philadelphia coinage of the time. The mint produced roughly 38.6 million coins that year, making the 1906 issue one of the more available dates in the series. While circulated examples are relatively common, higher-grade pieces with strong detail and preserved luster are less frequently encountered today due to the extensive circulation these coins experienced after release.
