Product Details

Morgan Silver Dollars made their debut with the United States Mint in 1878, ending a five-year break in silver dollar production after the Seated Liberty Dollar was canceled in 1873. By 1887, these historic coins were being struck at the Philadelphia Mint, New Orleans Mint, and San Francisco Mint. Today, you can find 1887 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins in certified condition available through BullionMax.

Each 1887 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin listed here is graded Mint State 65+ by PCGS. The plus sign means these coins stand out among MS65 pieces, featuring bright, high-quality mint luster and only a few tiny, scattered marks. In 1887, the Philadelphia Mint struck 20,290,000 Morgan Dollars, making up nearly 61% of the total 33,611,000 coins produced that year.

George T. Morgan created both designs used on the Morgan Silver Dollar. His portrayal of Liberty marked a shift in American coin art, offering a more natural and uniquely American image. The fine detailing in her hair and the addition of a Phrygian cap, symbolizing freedom, made Morgan’s Liberty a standout design of its time.

On the obverse of the 1887 Morgan Dollar, you’ll find Lady Liberty in a left-facing profile. She wears a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet crown. The border of the design features 13 stars representing the original American Colonies.

The reverse of the 1887 Morgan Silver Dollar features a bald eagle shown with its wings spread. Morgan’s heraldic eagle clutches the arrows of war and an olive branch of peace, blending strength and diplomacy in a single image.
