The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of America’s most recognized coins ever made for everyday use. Created by George T. Morgan, the Morgan Dollar was first released in 1878 and struck each year until 1904. In 1883, the Morgan Dollar was produced in five different versions, with proof and circulation coins coming from Philadelphia, and additional circulation coins struck at Carson City, New Orleans, and San Francisco. Right now, certified 1883 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The Morgan Dollar features a well-known design of Liberty, showing her in profile facing left. She wears a Phrygian cap with cotton and wheat woven into it, symbolizing America’s rich agricultural roots. To create this design, George T. Morgan chose to model Liberty after a real person—Anna Willess Williams, a Philadelphia schoolteacher whose classical features brought his vision to life.
Each 1883 Morgan Silver Dollar available here has been graded as Mint State 65. Coins with this grade display strong mint luster, with just a few light, scattered contact marks and possibly one or two bigger marks. Some coins may show a small patch of hairlines as well. The Philadelphia Mint produced the largest number of Morgan Dollars that year, accounting for more than 43% of the total 1883 mintage.
The obverse side of the 1883 Morgan Dollar features Morgan’s Liberty design. Liberty is shown with flowing hair and a confident expression, offering a fresh American style that moved away from the more traditional European look seen on earlier coins.
On the reverse of 1883 Morgan Silver Dollars, you’ll see Morgan’s heraldic eagle design. The bald eagle is shown with its wings spread high, clutching arrows and an olive branch to symbolize both strength and peace, with a wreath surrounding the eagle from below.
