Product Details

The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most famous coins ever made for everyday use in the United States. Designed by George T. Morgan, the coin was first issued in 1878 and stayed in production until 1904. In 1883, collectors saw several varieties of this classic silver dollar, with Philadelphia striking both circulation and proof versions, while Carson City, New Orleans, and San Francisco produced circulation coins. Today, certified 1883 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available at BullionMax.

Coin Highlights:

  • Arrives in a protective slab!
  • 6th year of Morgan Dollar production!
  • Philadelphia mintage totaled 12,290,000 coins!
  • Contains .7734 Troy oz of actual silver.
  • Issued a face value of $1 (USD) by the United States.
  • Bears a Grade of Mint State 63 from the Professional Coin Grading Service.
  • Obverse includes a portrait of Liberty.
  • Reverse displays a heraldic eagle.

The obverse of the 1883 Morgan Dollar showcases George T. Morgan’s portrait of Liberty. Unlike earlier designs that were influenced by European styles, this version shows Liberty with a loose hairstyle and calm expression, offering a more American look and feel.

On the reverse side of the 1883 Morgan Silver Dollar, Morgan’s design of a heraldic eagle comes to life. The eagle is shown with its wings raised high, surrounded by a wreath. It clutches arrows to show readiness to defend and an olive branch to represent peace.

Morgan based the Liberty design on Anna Willess Williams, a Philadelphia schoolteacher. Williams sat for several sessions while Morgan worked on the portrait. Though she became widely known as the “Silver Dollar Girl,” Williams chose to stay out of the spotlight.

Each 1883 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin offered here is graded Mint State 63. Coins at this grade show some minor marks and hairlines, with a few heavier contact marks, but still retain good original luster. In 1883, the Philadelphia Mint led production by a wide margin, creating millions more coins than the other mint locations.
