The obverse of the 1883 Morgan Dollar showcases George T. Morgan’s portrait of Liberty. Unlike earlier designs that were influenced by European styles, this version shows Liberty with a loose hairstyle and calm expression, offering a more American look and feel.

On the reverse side of the 1883 Morgan Silver Dollar, Morgan’s design of a heraldic eagle comes to life. The eagle is shown with its wings raised high, surrounded by a wreath. It clutches arrows to show readiness to defend and an olive branch to represent peace.

Morgan based the Liberty design on Anna Willess Williams, a Philadelphia schoolteacher. Williams sat for several sessions while Morgan worked on the portrait. Though she became widely known as the “Silver Dollar Girl,” Williams chose to stay out of the spotlight.

Each 1883 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin offered here is graded Mint State 63. Coins at this grade show some minor marks and hairlines, with a few heavier contact marks, but still retain good original luster.
