A few faint hairlines could also be visible under magnification. In 1882, San Francisco struck 9.25 million Morgan Dollars, a number that was second only to Philadelphia’s 11.1 million. New Orleans followed with 6.09 million, while Carson City produced just 1.113 million coins.

The Morgan Dollar was born from the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, a law requiring the Treasury to buy between two and four million dollars’ worth of silver every month for coin production. This act was part of an effort to balance the interests of silver miners in the West with financial leaders in the East during a time of intense debate over monetary policy.

On the obverse side of 1882-S Morgan Silver Dollars, you’ll find George T. Morgan’s famous design of Liberty. She is shown in left-profile relief wearing a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet crown. Thirteen stars also appear around her portrait.

The reverse side of the 1882-S Morgan Silver Dollar showcases another design from Morgan. It features a heraldic bald eagle with wings stretched wide. In its talons, the eagle grasps arrows representing war and an olive branch representing peace.
