The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most recognized classic silver dollars from the United States Mint. First issued in 1878, the design was created by Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan and marked the return of silver dollar coinage after a five-year break. Today, you can find 1880-CC Morgan Silver Dollar Coins in certified condition available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
In 1880, the Carson City Mint produced 591,000 Morgan Silver Dollars, a solid total for a smaller branch facility. These 1880-CC dollars come from the early period of the series, which began in 1878. Because output at Carson City was lower than at Philadelphia or San Francisco, collectors have long viewed the 1880-CC as an important date for building a focused Carson City set.
All 1880-CC Morgan Silver Dollar Coins offered here are certified at Mint State 63. In this grade, coins show numerous light contact marks along with a few more noticeable nicks. Some marks may appear in key focal areas, and a few scattered hairlines—or a small patch of hairlines—can be present. Even so, MS63 examples retain pleasing eye appeal and strong overall detail.
On the obverse of the 1880-CC Morgan Dollar Coin, Lady Liberty appears in left-profile relief. Morgan’s 1878 portrait shows Liberty in a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom, paired with a laurel wreath and a coronet. Around her are 13 stars honoring the original states.
The reverse of the 1880-CC Morgan Silver Dollar features Morgan’s heraldic eagle. This bald eagle design omits the national shield and depicts the bird clutching both arrows and an olive branch, representing readiness and peace in a balanced presentation.
