The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most recognizable coins in American numismatics and has attracted collectors for generations. Produced from 1878 to 1904 and once more in 1921, the series reflects an important era in American history when silver mining in the West was booming. The large size and classic design of the Morgan Dollar have helped make it a long-time favorite among collectors. This 1879 Morgan Silver Dollar has been graded MS66+ by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). Today, 1879 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins in certified condition are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1879 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin offered here has been graded Mint State 66+ by the PCGS. The plus designation indicates a coin that sits at the high end of the MS66 grade range. Coins at this level typically show strong mint luster with only a few small contact marks and minor hairlines that may be visible under magnification, reflecting careful preservation since striking.
The 1879 Morgan Silver Dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint represents an early issue from the series, coming just one year after the coin debuted in 1878. During that year, the Philadelphia facility produced approximately 14.8 million coins. While examples from this date are commonly seen in circulated condition, higher-grade mint state pieces with sharp details and bright luster are much harder to find and remain desirable among collectors.
On the obverse of the 1879 Morgan Dollar, the design shows a detailed portrait of Liberty facing left. Rather than using a purely symbolic figure, the design presents Liberty as an American woman. United States Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan created the portrait and based Liberty’s appearance on Anna Willess Williams, a Philadelphia schoolteacher whose profile was considered an ideal classical representation.
The reverse of 1879 Morgan Silver Dollars displays a detailed image of the American bald eagle with its wings spread. The eagle holds an olive branch in one talon and a bundle of arrows in the other. These elements represent the nation’s commitment to peace while maintaining the strength needed to defend itself.
