Product Details

The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most recognizable coins in American numismatic history and has been widely collected for more than a century. Produced by the United States Mint from 1878 through 1904 and once more in 1921, the series reflects a period when silver mining in the American West played an important role in the nation’s economy. This 1879-CC Morgan Silver Dollar is a notable example from the early years of the series and includes a capped die issue affecting the mint mark. Certified 1879-CC Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are now available from BullionMax.

The 1879-CC Morgan Silver Dollar was produced at the Carson City Mint in Nevada and is considered one of the more desirable coins in the Morgan Dollar series. Only 756,000 coins were struck at this facility in 1879, which was a relatively small mintage for the time. Many Carson City issues are sought after because of their connection to the silver mining boom of the American West, and the distinctive “CC” mint mark on the reverse has become closely associated with that era of frontier coinage.

All 1879-CC Morgan Silver Dollar Coins available here are graded Fine 12. At this grade level, the major design elements remain visible, though moderate wear has softened many of the finer details and portions of the lettering may show wear. Roughly one-third of all 1879-CC Morgan Dollars display the Capped Die issue, which affects the mint mark. This error causes raised metal around the CC mint mark due to a die problem, creating a blurred appearance that looks as though one CC is layered over another.

For the obverse of the 1879-CC Morgan Dollar Coin, the design shows Liberty facing left. Unlike earlier American coin designs that often used more stylized imagery, this portrait reflects the features of an American woman. Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan created the design and based Liberty’s profile on Anna Willess Williams, a Philadelphia schoolteacher whose appearance was selected as a model for the coin.

In the reverse design of 1879-CC Morgan Silver Dollars, the coin features the American bald eagle with its wings spread wide and its chest facing forward. The eagle holds an olive branch in one talon and a bundle of arrows in the other. These symbols represent the nation’s preference for peace while also recognizing its readiness to defend itself.
