During the early production of the Morgan Silver Dollar, four United States Mint branches were tasked with striking coins for circulation across the country. These mints included Philadelphia, New Orleans, Carson City, and San Francisco. Today, you can find 1878-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coins available online at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The Morgan Dollar tells the story of America’s financial and political struggles during the late 1800s. Many coins minted during this time were never released into everyday use. Instead, they stayed in Treasury vaults to back silver certificates. The coin became a major talking point during the “Free Silver” debate, a major topic in American politics leading up to the 1896 presidential election.
Each 1878-S Morgan Silver Dollar available here is certified Mint State 63. Coins with this grade show a good level of original mint luster but may have several small contact marks and a few heavier marks or hairlines that are noticeable without magnification. In 1878, Philadelphia and San Francisco had close production numbers, with San Francisco producing slightly more coins. Carson City, meanwhile, struck a smaller amount at just over 2 million coins.
On the obverse of the 1878-S Morgan Dollar, you’ll see George T. Morgan’s image of Liberty. She appears in left-profile relief wearing a Phrygian cap, a crown with “Liberty” inscribed, and a laurel wreath. Around her are 13 stars representing the original colonies of the United States.
The reverse of the 1878-S Morgan Silver Dollar features a heraldic eagle designed by Morgan. The eagle is shown with wings spread wide, holding arrows of war in one talon and an olive branch of peace in the other, symbolizing America’s readiness for either path.
