Bela Lyon Pratt originally created the Incuse Indian design for the quarter eagle and half eagle gold coins struck from 1908 to 1929. The design quickly became one of the most recognizable of its era due to its unusual appearance. Instead of having raised design elements like most coins, Pratt used an incuse format where the main imagery is pressed down into the surface.
