The United States Mint first released its platinum bullion coin in 1997. Known as the American Platinum Eagle, it was the only coin in the American Eagle series to feature modern designs of Lady Liberty and the bald eagle rather than traditional ones used on older U.S. coins. Right now, you can find 1997 1 oz American Platinum Eagle Coins available through BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
John Mercanti’s obverse artwork for the Platinum Eagle takes its cue from the Statue of Liberty. The portrait shows her face in a neoclassical style with a crown of stars symbolizing the original thirteen colonies. This modern version of Liberty has been a signature design for platinum bullion coins since their debut in 1997.
Each 1997 1 oz American Platinum Eagle Coin is packaged in a protective plastic flip. This release marks the very first year for the Platinum Eagle series, and the 1997 coin ranks third in total mintage behind the 1998 and 1999 issues.
The obverse side of the 1997 American Platinum Eagle shows the Statue of Liberty’s face in Mercanti’s detailed design. Unlike the gold, silver, and palladium Eagles, which use classic images from early 1900s coinage, this is the only modern Liberty image in the entire series.
On the reverse, you’ll find Thomas D. Rogers’ design of a bald eagle soaring over the land with the sun appearing on the horizon. This artwork is notable because it was the only reverse design used on both the BU and Proof versions of the coin in 1997 and again in 2017.
