Each 1996 1 oz Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf Coin is housed in a protective plastic flip. The 1996 issue holds the highest mintage among 1 oz platinum coins in the series during its original 1988–1999 run. Its total of 62,273 pieces is more than 22,000 higher than the next closest year (1992).

As with other Maple Leaf bullion coins, the reverse showcases the sugar maple leaf, a widely recognized emblem of Canada. The maple leaf’s association with the region reaches back to the early 18th century, when French settlers adopted it as a symbol, reflecting the sugar maple’s practical value. Indigenous communities had long relied on maple sap, making the leaf a natural link between First Nations traditions and later European settlement.

The obverse of the 1996 Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf features a right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. She is shown wearing the George IV State Diadem and a simple necklace. This is the third-generation Canadian coin effigy of the Queen and the first portrait of her on Canadian coinage created by a Canadian artist, Dora de Pedery-Hunt.

On the reverse of the 1996 1 oz Platinum Maple Leaf, you’ll find the sugar maple leaf. This artwork was originally prepared in 1979 by Walter Ott for the Gold Maple Leaf’s debut and has appeared on all Maple Leaf bullion metals since, including silver, platinum, and palladium.
