The Proof American Platinum Eagle Coin from the United States Mint is unique within the American Eagle lineup because one side of the coin has featured regularly changing designs throughout much of the series. From its debut in 1997 through 2017, collectors saw a new reverse design released almost every year. Starting in 2018, the Mint changed direction by introducing annual design updates on the obverse instead. Although fractional-weight Platinum Eagles are no longer produced today, they once played an important role in the series before being discontinued after 2008. Currently, 1/4 oz Proof American Platinum Eagle Coins in certified condition are offered online at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The obverse of the 1/4 oz Proof Platinum Eagle Coin showcases a striking image of the Statue of Liberty. Designed by John Mercanti, a longtime engraver at the United States Mint, this artwork was created specifically for the Platinum Eagle series and first appeared in 1997. The design focuses closely on Liberty’s face, capturing fine details such as her composed expression and the rays extending from her crown.
On the reverse of the Proof American Platinum Eagle, collectors may receive one of several different design themes. For this fractional weight, reverse designs typically feature the American bald eagle or symbolic imagery tied to American values and governance. One well-known collection of reverse designs is the Vistas of Liberty series. Produced from 1998 through 2002, this series depicted a bald eagle soaring above various landscapes across the United States, with a new scene introduced each year.
The Proof American Platinum Eagle program began in 1997 with four available sizes: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. Each denomination was struck in both Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated finishes. Production of fractional Proof Platinum Eagles continued annually until 2008, which marked the final release year for the smaller weights.
These 1/4 oz Proof American Platinum Eagle Coins are offered in PR or PF70 condition. A PR/PF70 grade indicates a flawless coin with strong strike quality, sharp details, and full original mint luster. After your payment is processed, the year and design will be selected at random. Specific years, reverse designs, or label details cannot be guaranteed.
