When the United States Mint introduced the American Platinum Eagle program in 1997, it followed a familiar path by offering the coins in Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof versions, similar to the Silver and Gold Eagle series. However, the Proof Platinum Eagle stood out right away thanks to its changing reverse designs. Unlike other Eagle coins that use the same reverse each year, Proof Platinum Eagles feature a unique reverse design annually. Today, certified 1/10 oz Proof American Platinum Eagle Coins are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1/10 oz Proof American Platinum Eagle Coin in this listing is graded PR/PF70, indicating a flawless condition with no visible imperfections under magnification. These coins retain their original mint finish and sharp design details. Orders are fulfilled on a random basis, so specific years, reverse designs, or label styles cannot be selected in advance. All coins are chosen only after payment has been fully processed.
The American Platinum Eagle series differs from other Eagle programs due to changes made to its production schedule over time. Early releases included fractional sizes such as 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz in both Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated formats through 2008. After that year, fractional Platinum Eagles were discontinued. Additionally, Brilliant Uncirculated Platinum Eagles were not produced from 2009 through 2013, before the series returned as a regular annual BU release beginning in 2016.
The obverse of the 1/10 oz Proof American Platinum Eagle Coin features a detailed portrait of the Statue of Liberty. Designed by John Mercanti specifically for this series, the image has been used on every BU Platinum Eagle since 1997 and appeared on Proof issues from the start of the program through 2017.
Reverse designs on the 1/10 oz Proof Platinum Eagle vary by year. From 1997 to 2008, each release showcased a different design. The first issue in 1997 displayed Thomas D. Rogers’ depiction of a bald eagle in flight. Later designs continued this theme, showing the national bird soaring across different American landscapes between 1998 and 2002.
