First introduced in 2006, the American Buffalo Gold Proof Coin was the first 24-karat gold proof coin released by the United States Mint. It is designed as a collector version of the American Buffalo Gold Bullion Coin. Proof coins are made using a specialized process where each blank is carefully handled and struck multiple times. This method creates detailed, lightly frosted designs set against a mirrored background for a clean and refined appearance. Right now, 2026-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Buffalo Coins are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each 2026-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Buffalo Coin is packaged in a protective capsule and includes a US Mint presentation box. The box is secured inside an outer shipper and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. For 2026, the coin features dual date marks of 1776 and 2026 on the obverse, along with the US Mint’s America 250 Liberty Bell emblem to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Alongside the America 250 celebration in 2026, the US Mint is also recognizing key milestones across its coin programs. The American Eagle Series reaches its 40th anniversary for both gold and silver coins, while the Gold Buffalo Series marks its 20th year of release.
The obverse of the 2026-W Proof American Gold Buffalo shows a right-facing portrait of an Indigenous figure. This design was originally created by James Earle Fraser for the 1913 Buffalo Nickel. Fraser did not base the image on one individual, but instead combined features from three Indigenous individuals he studied in the early 1900s.
On the reverse of the 2026-W 1 oz Proof Gold Buffalo Coin is an image of an American bison. Also designed by Fraser, the bison is shown in left-profile standing on a small mound. The design is inspired by Black Diamond, a bison that lived at the Central Park Zoo in the early 20th century, and captures the animal in a natural grazing stance.
