First issued by the United States Mint in 1986, the American Gold Eagle series launched with four weight options for investors, and each coin is struck in 22-karat gold. This 22-karat alloy is a bit unusual in today’s bullion market and is made of 91.67% gold, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver. On the obverse of the 2026 1 oz Gold Eagle Coin, you’ll find the classic Lady Liberty design created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Liberty is shown from the front as she walks forward, holding a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. A ring of stars frames the scene, and sun rays stretch outward across the background.
The reverse of the 2026 American Gold Eagle Coin shows the current bald eagle portrait. This design, introduced in 2021 and created by Jennie Norris in 2020, presents the eagle’s head in left-profile relief with sharp, clean detail.
Gold Eagles are best known for Saint-Gaudens’ Liberty image, originally used on the $20 Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933. Many collectors consider it one of the finest U.S. coin designs ever made. The original Gold Eagle reverse by sculptor Miley Busiek, used from 1986 through 2021, featured a family of eagles as a symbol of national pride and strength before being replaced by the single-eagle portrait.
