Among the four sizes in the Gold Eagle Series, the 1 oz coin remains the most popular year after year. Since its introduction, it has consistently had the highest production numbers, only occasionally topped by the 1/10 oz coin.
The obverse side of the 2026 American Gold Eagle features Lady Liberty. This design was first created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907 for the $20 Double Eagle. It shows Liberty walking forward with confidence, carrying a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other.
On the reverse of the 2026 1 oz Gold Eagle is the image of a bald eagle. This newer design, created by Jennie Norris in 2020 and first used on coins in 2021, gives a close-up look at the eagle’s head from a left-facing angle. The detail in the feathers and beak adds to its realistic appearance.
