The United States Mint celebrates two big milestones in 2026 for its most popular bullion releases. The American Eagle lineup turns 40, and the American Gold Buffalo marks 20 years since it first debuted. Introduced in 2006, the Gold Buffalo is still the only 24-karat gold coin the United States Mint produces every year. Right now, 2026 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Coins in certified condition are available from BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
Each Gold Buffalo contains a full troy ounce of .9999 pure gold and has a $50 face value. The designs come from sculptor James Earle Fraser and are based on the classic Indian Head (Buffalo) nickel that circulated from 1913 to 1938. That original nickel is remembered for its bold artwork, pairing a Native American profile on one side with a powerful bison on the other. By using the same designs, the modern Gold Buffalo keeps a clear connection to one of America’s most recognizable coin designs.
The 2026 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Coins offered here arrive in secure plastic slabs with MS70 certification. An MS70 grade represents a perfect example, with full original mint luster and no visible marks or flaws. Coins labeled First Day of Issue were received for grading within 24 hours of the coin’s official release from the mint, adding an extra layer of collectible appeal for those who like early-release certified pieces.
On the obverse of the 2026 American Gold Buffalo Coin is a right-facing portrait of an indigenous figure. The design shows detailed facial features, braided hair, and a single feather woven into the braid. Fraser created this portrait for the Buffalo nickel in 1913, and it remains one of the most well-known indigenous portraits ever used on United States coinage.
The reverse of the 2026 1 oz Gold Buffalo features an American bison. Another Fraser design from the 1913 Buffalo nickel, it depicts a large bison standing on a small mound of earth. The image was inspired by Black Diamond, a famous bison that lived at the Central Park Zoo in New York in the early 1900s.
