The obverse of the 2026 Gold Buffalo showcases a right-facing portrait of a Native American. Designed by James Earle Fraser for the 1913 Buffalo Nickel, this artwork combines the features of three different Native American leaders from the early 1900s rather than depicting a single person.

On the reverse, Fraser’s design features a left-profile view of the American bison. Inspired by Black Diamond, a bison once kept at the Central Park Zoo, this image shows the animal grazing with its head lowered.
