  • Reverse depicts Britannia.
  • Includes advanced security features on the reverse.

The obverse of the 2026 1/2 oz Gold Britannia features King Charles III. This portrait, designed by Martin Jennings in 2022, marks the first time the King’s image has appeared on British coinage. The design shows His Majesty in left-profile relief without a crown, following the modern official portrait style.

The reverse of the 2026 British Gold Britannia presents Britannia, the national personification of the United Kingdom. Philip Nathan’s 1987 design shows her standing on a coastal outcrop, holding a trident in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. At her side rests a Union Jack shield, and she wears a Corinthian helmet.

Britannia’s first appearance dates back to a 1672 farthing issued by Charles II, where she was depicted in a baroque style with flowing robes, a plumed helmet, and drapery inspired by Roman goddesses. By the 18th century, especially during George III’s reign, the style shifted to a neoclassical approach with cleaner lines and more structured details. Over time, her helmet design simplified, the shield often displayed the Union Jack, and the trident became a stronger symbol of Britain’s naval strength.

Each 2026 1/2 oz British Gold Britannia Coin is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Coins are offered individually in protective pouches or in sealed sheets of 20. The reverse includes enhanced security elements such as micro-engraved text, a latent image, detailed tincture lines on the Union Jack, and a motion texture wave pattern in the background.
