The American Gold Buffalo showcases designs by James Earle Fraser, first used on the Buffalo Nickel in 1913. Fraser, a well-known sculptor of his time, created a coin that reflected America’s heritage rather than using European-style imagery. His Buffalo Nickel design featured a Native American portrait and a bison, and it remained in circulation until 1938.

The obverse of the 2025 Gold Buffalo displays a right-facing portrait of a Native American man. Fraser created this image by combining features from three different tribal chiefs he met in the early 1900s. It was one of the earliest coin designs in the US to feature Native American imagery.

On the reverse of the 2025 1 oz Gold Buffalo Coin, there’s a left-facing American bison standing on a mound of earth. Fraser’s model for this design was Black Diamond, a bison that lived at the Central Park Zoo in New York City.
