The obverse of the 2025 1/2 oz Gold Maltese Cross Coin displays the official seal of the Central Bank of Malta. The design includes a shield held up by two armored knights. On each side of the seal, you’ll notice small Maltese crosses. The background features a sunburst-style pattern of radial lines.

On the reverse , the coin shows the classic Maltese Cross. This eight-pointed cross became the chosen emblem of the knights during the First Crusade. Each point stands for a value the knights aimed to follow: loyalty, piety, frankness, bravery, glory and honor, contempt of death, helping those in need, and respect for the church.

After leaving Jerusalem and later Rhodes, the knights settled on the island of Malta in 1530. There, the cross became tightly linked with Maltese identity. For over two centuries, it appeared on buildings, fortresses, and local coinage, becoming a lasting national symbol.
