On October 15, 1794, the United States Mint introduced the country’s first-ever dollar coin. Called the Flowing Hair Dollar, this historic coin featured a right-profile image of Liberty with her hair flowing, designed by the Mint’s first Chief Engraver, Robert Scot. To honor the 230th anniversary of this major moment in American coinage, the US Mint has issued a special gold coin in 2024. Right now, you can find certified 2024 1 oz Proof American Gold 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Coins at BullionMax.
Coin Highlights:
The Flowing Hair Dollar, made during 1794 and 1795, was the first official silver dollar coin issued by the US government. Liberty’s flowing hair on the obverse symbolized a young, free nation, while the reverse showed a small eagle surrounded by a wreath. Although it had a brief production run at the Philadelphia Mint, with only about 160,000 coins made, the Flowing Hair Dollar helped set the foundation for America’s independent financial system.
Each 2024 1 oz Proof American Gold 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Coin here is certified in near-perfect condition. Coins graded 69 on the Sheldon Numeric Scale are nearly flawless, with full mint luster and at most two very small imperfections, like tiny contact marks or faint hairlines, located outside of key design areas. While we cannot guarantee which grading service certified your coin, all are PF/PR69 examples. Please also note that slab label designs, colors, and styles can vary and we are unable to sort or select them.
The obverse of the 2024 Proof American Gold 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Coin shows Robert Scot’s original Liberty design. This right-facing portrait captures Liberty’s flowing hair, a symbol of youthful energy. Scot, who served as the first Chief Engraver of the US Mint from 1793 until his death in 1823, created the Flowing Hair Dollar and several other early American coin designs.
The reverse of the 2024 1 oz Proof Gold 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Coin brings back the classic heraldic eagle. A small eagle is surrounded by a wreath that curves around it, matching the look of the original 1794-1795 silver dollar. These special coins also feature historic edge lettering reading HUNDRED CENTS ONE DOLLAR OR UNIT.
