On the obverse of the 2018 1 oz Proof Gold Libertad Coin, you’ll see the official coat of arms of Mexico. This design shows a Golden eagle standing on a prickly pear cactus while holding a snake in its beak and talon. The image is based on a well-known legend and includes the inscription of the country’s name in Spanish.

The reverse of the coin displays the famous Winged Victory statue. This sculpture sits atop the Independence Victory Column in Mexico City. The column was built to celebrate 100 years of independence from Spanish rule and is one of the country’s most well-known landmarks.

The design of the Mexican coat of arms is inspired by an Aztec legend. According to the story, the Mexica people were told by their god Huitzilopochtli to settle where they saw an eagle eating a snake while perched on a cactus growing from a rock in a lake. This vision led them to build Tenochtitlan, which is now Mexico City.

Each 2018 1 oz Proof Mexican Gold Libertad Coin comes with a protective acrylic capsule. Only 1,000 of these coins were made, matching the mintage for the other fractional weights in the 2018 release. These coins have frosted visuals with mirror-like background fields.
